Although it seems dynamic IP in itself is not a limitation to hosting your own server (e.g. using dynDNS) I've not been able to do that using Cablecom Hispeed as a provider.

Trying to ping my IP address (which remains the same for several days) from outside I get no response. Same if I try to open an FTP session from outside (with an FTP server running on my home machine).

I'm trying to understand whether this a configuration problem on my side or whether Cablecom simply prevents setting your own server by blocking/filtering incoming traffic?

Thank you in advance for any comment.

yes, that is a configuration problem on your machine. cablecom does not block or filter any ports / traffic ...

what OS are you using? probably you are running a firewall with a restrictive ruleset ...

hi this is definately a configuration problem on your side (i assume u want to use port 21 for ftp)
cablecom does not block ports, if you are using winxp then maybe the internal firewall is turned on (this happens if you use a xp-install disk which does not include sp1 already)

Do you have any Router between your computer and your cablemodem?
If yes, then you have to activate a Port-Forwarding service on your router.

a second reason for your problem, could be a firewall, installed on your computer. search for some options about FTP protocol or the Port 21 on your firewall.

so.. could you tell us plz some more details... about your homenetwork (i.e.: Cablemodem --> My PC, or: Cablemodem --> Router --> My PC)
and about your OS, installed Firewall, etc.

Problem was the way I was trying to get in from the outside. There is actually no problem with my configuration...

All the points raised (firewall, port fowarding) are valid and need to be configured properly in order to operate any type of server.

Thank you for clearifying that CC does not restrict inbound traffic.
